Dunaújváros take European Super Cup glory!
Attila Mihók's team finished superbly as they claimed an 11-11 draw away in normal time of their European Super Cup final against Euroliga champions Kinef Kirishi and followed that up with victory in the ensuing penalty shootout to claim the prestigious trophy.
Indeed, Krisztina Garda gave Mihók's team the lead before Prokofieva levelled and Kata Menczinger nudged Hungarian noses in front once more. Zubkova restored parity befoe the end of the first quarter and the hosts took this momentum into the second period, Simanovich putting the Russians in front only for Gréta Gurisatti to equalise. Thereafter though, Dunaújváros struggled to convert chances and Kirishi took advantage through goals by Prokofieva and Kiricheva, although they did fail to convert a two-player advatange situation just before half-time too.
That miss proved to be important because a goal-laden third quarter saw Kirishi stretch their lead but only by one goal, their five strikes being answered by efforts from Vanda Vályi, Kata Menczinger, Diána Ziegler and Krisztina Garda as a 5-4 result in that penultimate period left Dunaújváros 10-7 down and still with some kind of hope, even if it was only left hanging by a thread.
It would take the best quarter of their lives to stay in the hunt for the trophy but Dunaújváros' players were sensationally up to the task, Gréta Gurisatti scoring two excellent goals, Geraldine Mahieu evading her marker to notch another and Menczinger setting up Vályi for a fourth goal of the quarter with just 59 seconds remaining. Kirishi scored just one but that was enough to level the scores at 11-11 and ensure the destination of the European Super Cup would be deciding via a penalty shootout.
That saw Dunaújváros' substitute goalkeeper Alexandra Kiss become a heroine with two penalty saves, feats which ensured it would be the Hungarian club's turn to lift the trophy!
"This is a huge success for this small club", claimed Mihók after the match. "It was a very difficult match because Kirishi defended superbly and it was difficult for us to catch our breath, at least until the fourth quarter. Then, we capitalised on our chances and worked so hard to swim into our positions, which led us to success in scoring goals, pulling the match back and eventually taking the victory".
